Mamadou Diabate and Bekadyia at Akropolis

In the countries of Western Africa music is only reserved to the Griot cast. The musical profession is inherited from generation to generation in the family clans. The Diabate clan is one of the most numerous musical clans in Western Africa and its musical instrument is the Balafon. A Balafon is a wooden melodic percussion instrument similar to the Xylophone. This family tradition has also predestined the upbringing of Mamadou Diabaté. He started playing at the age of five and his first teacher was naturally his father. Very soon he became interested in other kinds of African music, which didn't make his father very happy. This tension was solved when both the father and the son took part in the National Cultural Festival where they repeatedly won the first place for their common Balafon performance. Mamadou Diabate has been living in Austria since 2000 where he cooperates on multiple musical projects with both European and African musicians.

One of Mamadou Diabate's main projects has been his cooperation with the Bekadiya band. Bekadyia first started performing in 2002, in 2008 the lineup changed to the current one. The combination of traditional African music and instruments with European music and instruments results in a great version of Afro jazz. Their version of Afro jazz is very pleasant evidence that nothing is impossible in music. We'll all have a chance to witness this in Prague at the Akropolis Club on October 11.
