Located in the charming area of Prague’s Old Town in the center of the magnificent city is Traditional, a shop selling pieces from one of the few remaining collections of old carved print blocks for textile printing. These functional antiques are all handmade, hand carved, unique and one-of-a-kind. The blocks were used from the beginning of the 1800s to the turn of the 20th century. The print blocks were made with three layers of local wood and metals and were then carved, painted and then pressed directly on fabrics to create multi colored fabric prints. The collection on display and for sale at Traditional comes from the Bohemian town of Frydlant, which in the 1800s was under Austro-Hungarian rule. The Traditional shop also sells beautiful prints made from the handmade print blocks. Each block comes with a certificate of origin as well as with a 40-minute documentary film about the printing process. It is interesting to note that certain colorful patterns took up to 50 different carved blocks to reach the desired effect. The collection at Traditional is extremely limited and is the perfect chance for you to own a piece of central European history. Traditional also features other crafts such as scarves, porcelain, glass, ornaments, other antiques and more. It is interesting to note that the old wood blocks make unique wall art, suitable for any home or office decor.
