Charles University

Charles University is one of the oldest universities in Europe in continuous operation. It was founded in 1348 by Charles IV as the first institution for higher education in Central Europe and was based on the structure of the University of Paris with the four full faculties of Theology, Law, Medicine, and Art. Charles University is considered the leading university in the Czech Republic and a top university in Central and Eastern Europe. Today, Charles University boasts 17 faculties with 14 of them in Prague, 2 faculties in Hradec Králové and 1 in Plzeň, 3 institutes, 6 further education centers and more. The University has over 51,000 students and boasts over 6,000 internationals students. More information about the university, admission, classes, degrees and more is available online. The Karolinum, a famous Gothic building in the center of Prague’s Old Town is the original building of Charles University and it is used for the seat of the administration of the university and also the venue for graduation ceremonies.
