Kinsky Palace - National Gallery

Kinsky Palace is currently closed and will reopen in December 2010 and house the National Gallery's collection of Asian Art from its former home in Zbraslav Chateau. The 19th century Czech landscaped exhibition is over.

The small, but fascinating collection of 19th century Czech landscapes is located in the Rococo Kinsky Palace. Inside the gallery you will find yourself embarking on a colorful contemplative journey across the pretty Czech and Central European countryside. With a collection boasting impressive works by Norbert Grund (famous Czech painter of architecture and miniature Rococo paintings), Josef Navratil, Antonin, Amalie and Josef Manes, Jakub Schikaneder, Jan Preisler, and Alois Kalvoda (Kinsky Palace features a whole room dedicated to Kalvoda and his etchings, aquatints and charcoals) among others, the gallery is a vivid symphony of mountains, forests, lakes and villages and a quiet escape from bustling Old Town Square located right outside the palace doors. Czech Landscape is divided into two sections which is exhibited in the paintings, Neoclassicism and Pre Romanticism; Neoclassicism was based on Italian models and taught at the Prague Academy headed by Josef Bergler, while Pre Romanticism focused on how Literature softened Neoclassicism at the turn of the century by instilling emotion and sentiment into the subjects under the influence of Salomon Gessner, Swiss painter and poet. Showcased in this gallery is also the obvious influence that French art had on the Czech landscape, have a look around and see the impressionistic impulses that pop out visually. Some landscapes feature not only the beauty of the European countryside, but also underlying symbolism seen in mysterious night scenarios and the lyrical moods some of these paintings exhibit. A stroll through Kinsky Palace is a perfect way to spend your day 'outside' of Prague if you wish.
