If it sometimes seems as if all the restaurants and bars located around Old Town Square are all extremely tourist-oriented, you should know about Kolkovna. When you happen to be in this area and are feeling thirsty for a glass of real Pilsner, try Kolkovna restaurant. This restaurant, the holder of the Prague 1 City Hall's award "The Best Pub" and of the title "The Best Czech and Slovak Pub" which was given to Kolkovna by the Prague Post weekly newspaper in 2004, is located in a sensitively and meticulously renovated building of a former printing office for fee stamping. The interior of the restaurant is designed by architect Jiri Hanzlik, and successfully evokes the old-world atmosphere, which is underlined by the beautifully restored original brewery equipment, the antique advertising posters and the old photographs. The result is a feeling of tranquility and a certain kind of security, underlined by massive wooden chairs and tables. Kolkovna’s star is its beer featured on tap; besides the traditional Pilsner Urquell you can also have alcohol-free Radegast Birell and half-dark Master beer. If you are not a beer lover, the drink menu at Kolkovna is extensive and varied, ranging from many kinds of coffee and light drinks to cocktails and a selection of quality wines from all over the world. Kolkovna also serves bar food that goes perfectly with beer; enjoy the traditional Czech specialties such as a pickled sausage (utopenec), collared pork (tlacenka) or try hot chicken wings, homemade smoked meat from a local smoking room and much more. However, Kolkovna offers more than snacks to go with your beer. The food menu is just as extensive as the drink menu with emphasis put on traditional Czech specialties made with contemporary interpretations, complemented by a few Italian and international dishes. It might be worth mentioning that you can pre-order a roast goose, duck or turkey, but also roast piglet or lamb to enjoy with your friends and family. Kolkovna belongs to a chain of restaurants run by the Kolkovna Group Company, which was founded in the nineties. Following the great success of Kolkovna, the company opened a few other restaurants including The Celnice and Olympia restaurants, which are based on the same concept as Kolkovna, the Lary Fary restaurant (whose menu includes sushi) and Bellavista and Fish & Glamour Cafe. The Old Town Kolkovna is a safe bet whether you feel like a pint of beer after a busy day or for a planned party or special event with your friends or family.
