Bears and Lookout Tower in Beroun

Beroun, a small town south-west of Prague, has a lot to offer not only to children, but to  visitors of all ages. You can easily reach Beroun after about a 45-minute train ride from the center of Prague. From the Beroun railway station you can head to the picturesque main square in the center of town where farmer’s markets, pottery and other crafts markets and a range of events take place regularly. Husovo Square is also home to the local information center where you will get information on tourist attractions in the town and its surrounding areas. After a ten-minute walk from the square you will reach Městská Hora (Town Mountain), a dominant hill in the center of town on the top of which there is a lookout tower dating from 1936. In the quiet forest park, part of which is also a one and a half kilometer long nature trail, you can find playgrounds for children and a special enclosure (Medvědárium) that is home to the brown bears who will appeal especially to young visitors. It is no wonder than that the town of Beroun has a bear on its town seal. The enclosure is home to three brown bears who are brothers – Matěj, Vojta and Kuba – that have been living there since 2000. In the close vicinity of the historic town center you can also enjoy views of the Beroun Čertovka, a man-made branch of the Berounka River, in the vicinity of which there are several watermills that are no longer used today.
