*American musician John Maus will perform at the MeetFactory on October 31, 2024.* Since his solo debut in 2006, John Maus has established a cult following as a visionary musician and a synth-obsessed outsider artist with one foot in the past and one foot in the future. Maus's hypnagogic, retrofuturist synth-pop in a riveting live karaoke show (as dubbed by the artist himself) returns to MeetFactory after seven long years. Have you seen... John Maus live? John Maus experiments with vintage synthesizers and obscure drum machines on his six studio albums, but his work is much more than just another retromanic project exploiting the aesthetics of 80s electronica, goth-pop or post-punk. A fundamental and perhaps less obvious influence and source of inspiration in Maus's discography is his passion for Renaissance vocal polyphony and the modality of medieval music, while his (often bizarre and radical) repetitive lyrics try to make sense of the inhumanity of today's world. Less than a year into the release of his acclaimed record Screen Memories, which Maus toured with the last time he visited Prague in 2017, came the gleefully absurd Addendum, recorded using a self-made modular synthesizer, an album that takes his lo-fi avantgarde pop and thunderous baritone vocal lines to apocalyptic heights. “As society crumbles, John Maus’ commitment to being John Maus is inspiring, tapping an unexpected synchronicity with our doomed world.” — Pitchfork
