A Nation of Sports Enthusiasts and Professionals
Sports play a significant role in the life of many Czechs. The two leading sports are football and ice hockey, which both draw the attention of loyal Czech supporters. There are many other sports with professional leagues such as basketball, volleyball, handball, athletics, floorball and others. Most of the biggest sports events take place in these high capacity venues: Eden Arena, O2 Arena, Tipsport arena, and Strahov Stadium, which is no longer used for commercial sports events, but it has a capacity of 220,000 people. Football matches between the two Prague rivals, Slavia and Sparta, belong to the most exciting sports events in Prague.
This passion for sports has led to several achievements: A gold medal in ice hockey at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games, six ice hockey World Championship medals from 1996 to 2001, and altogether almost 100 Olympic medals in various sports.
