Municipal House

Completed in 1911, the Municipal House is a fine example of Art Nouveau architecture in Prague, perhaps even the best. Designed by Antonin Balsanek and Osvald Polivka and built on the former site of the Royal Court Palace, the Municipal House is a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike. The large building boasts a stunning concert hall, a grand cafe and the exquisite Francouzska Restaurant, as well as exhibition halls, meeting rooms and a basement bar. Catering for events taking place in the Municipal House is provided mainly by the Vyšehrad 2000 Group and Francouzska Restaurace.The beauty is in the details of the Municipal House, intricate gilded decorations, gorgeous ceramics, vivid stained glass windows and colorful murals depicting the history of the Czech lands. The brilliant atmosphere created is the outcome of the talented involvement of prominent Czech painters of the time, Mikolas Ales, Alfons Mucha, Jan Preisler, Vaclav Jansa, Jakub Obrovsky, Josef Wenig and Frantisek Zenisek, to name a few, and the sculptors Karel Novak, Frantisek Uprka, Bohumil Kafka, Josef Vaclav Myslbek and Josef Maratka.
