Jílové u Prahy Regional Museum
Do you want to know how much a gold brick weighs and learn many other interesting things about this precious metal? Then visit the Jílové u Prahy Regional Museum that is located only 40 km south of the capital city and deals with the history of gold mining and processing not only in the Jílové u Prahy area. You will learn about the occurrence of gold in nature and its use in human life, about the areas of gold mining in the Czech Republic, medieval mining tools, gold panning (in summer months you can try gold panning in the museum courtyard), historical documents and maps, golden coins and many other interesting things. Besides the permanent exhibition there is a nature trail, established in 1988, that will take you to the former shafts and mines and other interesting places (children under 6 years of age should not enter the shafts). The trail has two routes and is accessible year round. Both start only 40 meters from the museum entrance. Before you set off, you can walk through the city center which features Masaryk Square, a true cultural heritage spot. Do not forget to dress warmly, as the shafts are only 8 degrees Celsius year-round. You can get to Jílové u Prahy by suburban buses or the legendary Sázava Pacific Railway which leads about 1,5 km out of town and crosses the 48-meter high viaduct near Žampach, the highest stone bridge in central Europe.
