Lednice Chateau

Located near the Austrian border in South Moravia is the beautiful UNESCO protected Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape where you will find the grand Lednice Chateau. The chateau is situated in an English style park, the largest in the Czech Republic, complete with ponds and greenhouses plus fairy tale follies including temples, a minaret (the tallest outside of the Muslim world at the time it was built in 1797-1804), a romantic structure made to look like a Scottish ruin and much more. The town of Lednice first belonged to the royal Liechtenstein family in the Middle Ages; it was during the Renaissance that the chateau was constructed as a villa and in the 17th century was used as a summer residence by the Liechtenstein Princes. In 1846-1858 the Viennese architect Jiří Wingolmuller and his successor Jan Heidrich reconstructed the chateau into its current day neo Gothic style. The neo Gothic style is complete with Gothic style Oriel windows, portals, spouts and battlements. The gorgeous interiors boast royal rooms with bright turquoise and red color schemes with carved wooden elements such as coffered ceilings and carved spiral staircases.
