Melnik Chateau
Located close to Prague is the lovely town of Melnik, a town known for its chateau that sits perched atop the confluence of the Vltava and the Labe Rivers. The region is an important agricultural center in the country and produces fruits, vegetables, potatoes, corn sugar beet and of course, wine. Anyone who lives in the region is well aware of the annual wine festival that takes place one September weekend out of the year to everyone’s delight. The beautiful chateau, owned by the famous Lobkowicz family is prized not only for its gorgeous interior but also for its extensive wine cellars. The chateau is the current home of Jiri or George Lobkowicz who has been renovating it himself since 1992. The castle dates back to the 9th century when it was originally a wooden castle, it was then rebuilt in stone in the Romanesque style and then in the Gothic style. In the 16th century the Renaissance chateau then underwent a Baroque reconstruction, the current style of the chateau.
