Jindřichův Hradec

Jindřichův Hradec is a city in the Czech Republic in the South Bohemian Region. The first mention of the city in recorded books dates back to 1220 but beforehand the area was more than likely a Slavic settlement. The 13th century saw the building of a grand Gothic castle to a city that was quickly growing and was the second largest city in the Bohemian kingdom according to the census after the Thirty Years’ War. Jindřichův Hradec features many beautiful sights including the Gothic castle, which was rebuilt in the 16th century into a Renaissance chateau. The Jindřichův Hradec Chateau is the third largest castle in the Czech Republic after Prague Castle and the Cesky Krumlov Castle. The massive castle showcases 320 rooms containing priceless works of art and volumes of books. Other attractions include the District Museum, located in a noteworthy Renaissance building, which showcases the famous Kryza, the world’s largest mechanical manger scene, the preserved Jewish Cemetery from the 1400s, the Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, The Church of the Most Holy Trinity, The Church of St. Jacob, the Church of St. Wenceslas and the Gothic City Hall with the surrounding houses in the city’s old marketplace.
