After he is suddenly convicted of her murder, he inexplicably disappears and a young, carefree mechanic named Pete appears in his cell. In this critically misunderstood cult classic of the time, David Lynch returns to Los Angeles (specifically to a house in the Hollywood Hills that becomes his home and studio in real life as well). The looping and fragmented narrative of this nocturnal neo-noir is a distinctly oneiric work thanks to its disjointed and eerily ambient sound design, but one that attempts to blend its abstract plane with the legacy of the most lush noir films. The term “fever dream” can be applied to all of Lynch's films, but for Lost Highway, the label is perhaps most apt. Moreover, nowhere do you hear such a haunting use of Bowie's music as in the opening and closing of this film.
