The Municipal Library – City Gallery Prague

Located on Mariánské Square with such grand buildings as Old Town City Hall, The exquisite Baroque Clam Gallas Palace and a section of the massive Klementinum complex is City Gallery Prague’s exhibition hall at the Municipal Library. The building was built in 1925 to 1928 and was designed by František Roith, an architect and student of Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy. The building was originally intended for use as a cultural house, with exhibition, lecture and concert halls. The building’s eastern wing is home to the flat of the Prague Mayor, a flat that is decorated in the hip Art Deco style. The original intention of the building holds true today, as it is home to the city library, lecture halls and exhibition space. City Gallery Prague acquired the extensive gallery space on the 2nd floor of the Municipal Library building in 1992. After a meticulous renovation City Gallery Prague has been featuring representative exhibitions to the city of Prague and its visitors. The renovation included the birth of a new entrance, designed by architect Vlado Milunič in 1996 and located on Valentinská Street.
