Plzeň Historic Underground
If you want to discover the secret life under the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic, visit the Plzeň historic underground tunnel network, which is one of the most famous symbols of this west Bohemian city. The labyrinth of corridors, cellars and wells started to be built under the city in the 14th century and so it is no wonder that it is connected with the history and present of Plzeň. The tour is long nearly 800 meters and visitors learn about the origin, history and function of the underground network whose total length under the city reaches some 20 km. Thanks to archeological findings that were discovered here visitors can also learn about the local life in the Middle Ages. Part of the guided tour includes a beer tasting (for visitors above 18 years of age) and a tour of a water tower from the first half of the 16th century. Tickets can be bought at the Brewery Museum building where the underground tours start and end and where you can also buy a souvenir at the local gift shop to remember your experience. If you still crave mystery and adventure after visiting the Plzeň historic underground, we recommend also visiting the Plzeň Museum of Ghosts and Fairy Tales.
